An octopus has three hearts

This is an octopus. It lives in the sea. It has eight arms. It can swim. It can also walk on the sea floor.

The octopus is small. A big fish comes near. The octopus is afraid. It goes under a rock. The fish cannot see it. The octopus is safe.

An octopus has three hearts. You have one heart. The octopus has three! Its hearts help blood move in its body. This helps it live in the sea.

The fish goes away. The octopus comes out. It looks for food. It finds a small crab. It eats the crab.

Now the octopus is tired. It goes back under the rock. It is time to rest.

We sleep. We dream.

It is night. Mia is in bed. She is tired. She closes her eyes. Soon she is asleep.

Mia has a dream. In her dream, she can fly. She flies over her house. She sees a big blue sea. Then she sees a pink cat. The cat can talk!

Mia is happy. She laughs in her dream. But then she wakes up. She is in her bed. There is no pink cat. She cannot fly.

Why do we dream? We do not know everything about dreams. We know that the brain is still at work when we sleep. Dreams can be funny, happy, or a little scary.

Mia gets up. She tells her dad about the cat. They laugh together. Tonight she will sleep again. Maybe she will have a new dream.

Planes fly high

Look! A big plane is on the ground. People go inside. The plane starts to move. It goes fast. Then it goes up into the sky.

A girl looks out of the window. She sees cars and houses. They look very small. The plane goes up and up.

Why does the plane fly so high? High in the sky, there is less air. The plane can move through the air more easily. This can help it use less fuel.

But the air is also very cold. And there is not much air to breathe. That is why the plane has a warm room inside for the people.

The girl looks out again. She sees white clouds. Soon the plane will go down. She is happy to see a new city.

A day in Rome

This is Rome. It is a big city a very long time ago. There are no cars. There are no phones.

A boy called Lucius wakes up. He eats bread. Then he goes outside with his mother. The street is busy. People walk. Some people sell food.

Lucius sees a man with fish. He sees a woman with fruit. His mother buys some fruit. They walk to a place with water. People come here to get water.

Some children in Rome go to school. Other children help at home or at work. Life is not the same for every family.

At night, Lucius goes home. He eats with his family. Then it is time for bed. The city is old to us, but for Lucius it is home.

Trees talk?

Here is a tree. It is big and green. It has leaves. It has roots under the ground. The roots take in water.

A small tree grows next to it. The small tree needs water and light too. Both trees live in the same forest.

Under the ground, there are very small living things. Some of them help trees get food from the ground. The trees can help them too.

Sometimes one tree can help another tree. But trees do not talk with words like people. They have no mouths. They cannot say hello.

A bird sits in the big tree. The wind moves the leaves. The forest is full of life. Some of that life is easy to see. Some is hidden under our feet.

Coffee and our body

Here is a cup of coffee. It is hot. Some adults like to drink it in the morning.

Coffee starts with a plant. The plant grows small fruit. Inside the fruit are seeds. People take the seeds out. They dry them. Then they make them hot. The seeds turn brown.

People use the brown seeds to make coffee. They add hot water. Now they have a drink.

Long ago, coffee grew in parts of Africa. Later, people took it to other places. Today, people drink coffee in many countries.

Some people like coffee with milk. Some like it with no milk. Some do not like coffee at all.

A little seed can travel a long way. And it can become a drink that many people know.

Look at the Moon

Look at the Moon! It is in the sky. Tonight it looks like a big round ball.

A few nights later, the Moon looks different. Now we see only part of it. Is the Moon getting smaller? No. It is still the same Moon.

The Sun gives us light. The Sun also lights up the Moon. But we cannot always see all of the bright part.

The Moon goes around Earth. As it moves, we see different parts of the side that has light. That is why its shape seems to change.

One night, it looks round. Another night, it looks like a small smile.

A boy looks up with his sister. They look for the Moon every night. It is a fun way to see how the sky changes.

Bees make honey

This is a bee. It is small. It can fly. It sees a flower. The flower is yellow.

The bee goes to the flower. It finds sweet food there. Then it flies home. Many bees live together in one place.

The bees make honey from the sweet food they find in flowers. Honey is sweet. It is thick. People like to eat it on bread.

Honey has very little water. This helps it stay good for a long time when it is kept in a closed jar.

The bees work hard. They go to many flowers. They bring food home. They make honey together.

Now the bee goes out again. It sees a red flower. Then it sees a blue flower. There is more work to do!

How we remember

Anna is in a shop. She hears a song. She knows this song! She smiles.

The song makes Anna think of the sea. She remembers a day with her family. The sun was hot. The water was blue. They played on the beach.

Now Anna is in the shop, but she can see that day in her mind. She feels happy.

Music can help us remember things. A song can make us think of a person, a place, or a special day.

Anna goes home. She plays the song for her sister. Her sister remembers the beach too. They talk about that happy day.

The song is only a few minutes long. But it brings back a day from many years ago. That is a lovely thing about music.

A bridge over water

Here is a river. The water is wide. A girl wants to go to the other side. She cannot walk on the water.

There is a bridge over the river. The girl walks onto it. The bridge is strong. She can cross the water.

A car goes over the bridge. Then a big bus goes over it. The bus is very heavy. But the bridge does not fall.

How can it hold so much? The bridge has strong parts under it. They help carry the weight down to the ground.

People work hard to make bridges safe. They choose strong things to build with. They check the bridges too.

The girl gets to the other side. She looks back at the bridge. It helps people cross the river every day.

Penguins in the cold

It is very cold. A penguin stands on the ice. There is snow. The wind is strong.

The penguin is a bird, but it cannot fly. It can swim very well. It goes into the sea to find fish.

How does it stay warm? The penguin has many small feathers. They help keep its body warm. It also has fat under its skin. This helps too.

The penguin comes out of the water. It stands near other penguins. They stay close together when it is very cold.

A small penguin stays near its family. It needs help to stay warm and safe.

The wind is still strong. But the penguins are made for life in a very cold place. They can live where many other animals cannot.

Look at the map

Here is a map. It shows a town. There are roads, houses, and a river.

Look at the top of the map. On many maps, the top is north. But why?

Earth is round. It has no real top or bottom in space. People can draw a map in different ways.

Long ago, some people made maps with other directions at the top. Today, many maps put north at the top because people are used to it.

A boy looks at his map. His home is near the river. The park is north of his home. He looks up and walks to the park.

A map helps us find places. But we must know which way the map is pointing. Then we can use it to go where we want.
