The secret of the old tree

Un árbol antiguo guarda la historia de un pueblo.

Liam has always regarded the old tree near his school as a familiar landmark. Its broad branches provide shade in summer, and generations of children have played beneath it. Yet he has never considered that the trunk might contain a record of its past. When a researcher arrives to study the tree, Liam asks how anyone can discover its age. She explains that many trees form annual growth rings. By examining these rings, scientists can estimate age and sometimes identify periods of faster or slower growth. The researcher shows him photographs of wood samples. Some rings are wide, while others are narrow. Rainfall, temperature and competition for resources can influence growth, although the relationship is not always straightforward. She also points out that annual rings are not equally clear in every species or climate. Liam worries that studying the rings will damage the tree. The researcher explains that specialists may take a narrow core sample without cutting down the trunk, but even this method requires care and professional judgement. Inspired, Liam decides to investigate the tree's human history as well. His grandfather remembers a village celebration held nearby, while an elderly neighbour recalls the road before it was paved. Liam combines these memories with a drawing of the tree for a school exhibition. He realises that science and personal stories can reveal different parts of the same history: one preserved in wood, the other in people's memories.
