The river that changed course

Un río enseña por qué cambia el paisaje.

During a visit to her grandfather, Sofia discovers that the river she knows has not always followed its present route. An old photograph shows a broad bend near a tree that now stands far from the water. The change seems impossible until her grandfather explains how rivers reshape their surroundings. Flowing water transports sediment, including sand, mud and small stones. At a bend, the current is often stronger along the outer bank, where erosion can remove material. On the inner bank, slower water may deposit sediment, gradually building a new surface. Sofia notices both processes during their walk. One bank has exposed roots and a steep edge, while the opposite side contains a shallow strip of sand. Her grandfather warns her not to approach the unstable bank, particularly after heavy rain. He explains that changes may take decades, but floods can alter a river much more rapidly. In some landscapes, a river eventually cuts across a narrow bend, leaving an isolated curved lake behind. Sofia becomes interested in the practical consequences. If river channels can move, building homes and roads close to them requires careful planning. Natural floodplains also provide space for high water to spread. At home, she places her photographs beside the older images and marks the river's changing position. What first appeared to be a peaceful, unchanging scene now reveals a landscape shaped by constant movement.
