The Paper Boat

Un pequeño barco de papel lleva una invitación inesperada.

Ben spends the morning complaining about the rain. A football match he has looked forward to all week has been cancelled, and he cannot imagine anything interesting to do indoors. His sister Mia proposes an experiment: they will build paper boats and see whether they can float. After several attempts, they produce three boats from coloured paper. When the weather improves, their father accompanies them outside. They discover a narrow stream of rainwater beside the pavement and watch one boat travel a few metres before becoming trapped against a stone. A girl standing nearby seems fascinated. Mia asks whether she would like to try, and the girl introduces herself as Lily. She has recently moved into the area and has not made many friends. The children fold another boat for her, and she decorates it with a bright red heart. They choose a puddle safely away from traffic and compare how the boats move when the wind changes. Some tip over quickly, while others remain upright. Their game becomes a mixture of friendly competition and shared laughter. As they talk, Lily explains that she misses her old school. Ben realises that joining an unfamiliar group might take courage, so he invites her to the playground the next day. The afternoon has not turned out as Ben expected. He has learned something about floating objects, but the more important discovery is that a small invitation can make someone feel welcome.
