The night train window
Un viaje nocturno cambia la forma de mirar el mundo.
During his first overnight train journey, Omar expects to spend most of the time sleeping. Instead, the view from the window captures his attention. Once the train leaves the city, scattered lights reveal houses, roads and small stations that he would never normally notice. A fellow passenger is sketching the landscape in a notebook. Curious, Omar asks how she can draw anything when the train is moving so quickly. She explains that she concentrates on a few important shapes rather than trying to record every detail. Inspired, Omar borrows a pencil from his mother and begins drawing. His first attempt shows a station platform under a single lamp. Before he can finish, the train pulls away. He adds the missing details from memory, including a traveller carrying an enormous bag. The woman tells him that sketching can help people pay closer attention. A photograph captures a moment instantly, but drawing encourages her to choose what matters most. Omar discovers that the process makes him notice things he might otherwise ignore. As the night continues, the train crosses a bridge and passes a group of distant houses. Omar sketches their glowing windows as simple squares against a dark hillside. Eventually he closes his notebook and rests his head against the seat. The journey has become more than a way of reaching his aunt's home. It has shown him how ordinary places can become memorable when someone takes the time to observe them.
