The night of the meteor shower

Una noche de estrellas fugaces cambia los planes de una familia.

Leo's family travels beyond the town to watch a meteor shower. His sister has checked the forecast and chosen a field with an open view of the sky. Even so, Leo begins to doubt their plan when nothing happens during the first twenty minutes. A sudden streak of light changes his mood. His mother explains that the object was not a star but a meteor: the visible result of a small particle entering Earth's atmosphere at high speed. Most particles are tiny, although the light they produce can be striking. She adds that many annual meteor showers occur when Earth crosses streams of debris left along a comet's orbit. The particles are spread through space, so meteors appear at irregular intervals rather than arriving according to a precise timetable. The family lies back on the blanket and watches patiently. They notice that artificial lights from distant roads make the faintest stars difficult to see. Leo understands why choosing a dark location matters. Later, several meteors appear within a few minutes. One leaves a particularly bright trail, prompting an excited conversation about how enormous space must be. The evening becomes more than a science lesson. Leo learns that some experiences cannot be hurried, and that sharing a quiet moment can be as memorable as the event itself. When they leave, he asks whether they can make the trip an annual tradition.
