The Missing Melody

Un músico recupera una canción olvidada.

During a rainy afternoon, Tom hears his grandfather play an unfamiliar melody on the old family piano. The tune begins confidently, then stops. Grandad explains that his mother used to play it, but the final section has disappeared from his memory. Tom proposes a small project. They record the opening phrase and experiment with possible endings. Because Tom cannot read musical notation, he invents a system of arrows and coloured dots to represent changes in pitch and rhythm. Their first attempts are unsuccessful. Grandad sometimes recognises a sequence of notes, only to reject it a few minutes later. They gradually discover that remembering a melody is not the same as reconstructing a recording: memories can change over time. Tom asks other relatives whether they recognise the tune. His aunt recalls the rhythm and remembers that the song was often played during family celebrations. Her description helps them choose between two possible endings. At the next gathering, Tom and Grandad perform the version they have developed. Nobody claims it is a perfect copy of the original, but several relatives recognise its character. The performance leads to stories about people Tom never had the chance to meet. He realises that the project was never only about finding the missing notes. Working together has helped the family preserve memories and create a new tradition around an old melody.
