The last lantern
Una luz en una calle oscura une a varios vecinos.
A storm leaves Emma's neighbourhood without electricity just as she and her father are returning home. The shops are closing, the traffic lights are out, and the familiar street suddenly feels strange. Then Emma notices a lantern shining from a window above the corner shop. Mrs Green, the shop's owner, welcomes them into her flat. Her lantern is an old camping model, and she keeps it ready for emergencies. Within minutes, several neighbours have joined them. Someone brings bread, another offers bottled water, and a student finds a pack of cards. Emma usually passes these people without saying much. Now she learns that the baker once lived by the sea and that the student is training to become a nurse. As they talk, the storm seems less frightening. Even the little dog, which was shaking at every loud noise, falls asleep beside the table. An hour later, the street lamps flicker back to life. Everyone thanks Mrs Green, but she points out that the evening only worked because each person contributed something. Before leaving, they agree to organise a neighbourhood supper. Emma has always thought of emergencies as moments when people need powerful machines and expert help. Tonight, she discovers another kind of resource: a community whose members are willing to look after one another.
