The broken violin

Una violinista descubre que la música no depende de la perfección.

Sara's first solo performance is approaching, and she has spent weeks practising a piece she loves. The evening before the concert, however, she discovers a broken string in her violin case. She immediately imagines the worst: the instrument will not be ready, and everyone will be disappointed. Her grandfather encourages her to contact her teacher rather than give up. The following morning, the teacher replaces the string and checks the violin carefully. The practical problem is solved, but Sara's anxiety remains. She explains that she is frightened of making a mistake in front of the audience. Her teacher offers a different way to think about performing. Music, she says, is not a competition to produce flawless notes. It is a way of communicating feeling and inviting other people to listen. When Sara steps onto the stage, she notices how bright the lights are. She begins cautiously, concentrating on each movement. After the opening phrases, the familiar melody helps her relax. She plays with increasing expression, until one difficult passage goes wrong. For a second, she is tempted to stop. Instead, she finds her place and continues. The applause at the end surprises her. Her grandfather later says that he particularly enjoyed the quiet section near the middle. He does not even mention the missed note. Sara understands that preparation matters, but so does resilience. A good performance is not necessarily one without errors; it is one in which the musician has something meaningful to share.
