Why do people dream?

What scientists know—and still do not know—about our sleeping minds.

Mia goes to bed after a long day. She closes her eyes and falls asleep. Soon she starts to dream.

In her dream, Mia is flying over her town. She sees her school and the park. Then a pink cat starts talking to her. Everything feels real, even though it is impossible.

In the morning, Mia wakes up in her own bed. She remembers the cat, but she cannot remember how the dream ended.

Why do people dream? Scientists are still looking for a complete answer. We know that the brain stays active during sleep. Some dreams may be connected to things we see, feel, or think about during the day.

Not every dream has a special meaning. Sometimes dreams are simply strange stories made by our sleeping brain.

Mia tells her family about the pink cat. Everyone laughs. She hopes to see it again in another dream.

In the morning, Mia tells her dad about her dream. She saw a purple cat. The cat could talk! Her dad smiles. Dreams can be funny, and sometimes they can feel real.
