Why does an octopus have three hearts?

The surprising biology of one of the ocean’s cleverest animals.

An octopus is an animal that lives in the sea. It has eight long arms and a soft body. It can swim, but it can also move along the sea floor.

One day, an octopus sees a large fish. The fish may want to eat it. The octopus hides under a rock. Its soft body can fit into very small places.

Here is something surprising: an octopus has three hearts. People have only one. Two hearts help send blood to the parts of its body that take air from water. The third heart sends blood to the rest of the body.

When the fish leaves, the octopus goes out to find food. It catches a small crab with its arms. Then it returns to its safe place under the rock.

The octopus has a very different body from ours. But, like us, it needs food, air, and a safe place to rest.

An octopus has a hard mouth called a beak. It uses the beak to eat. The rest of its body is soft. That is why it can hide in small spaces. It is a very unusual sea animal.
