The recipe in the old notebook
Una receta familiar esconde una historia.
Nina discovers the blue notebook by accident, hidden behind a row of modern cookbooks in her grandmother's kitchen. Its handwritten recipes are difficult to read in places, but one page catches her attention: an apple cake marked “For rainy afternoons.” Her grandmother pauses when she sees it. The recipe belonged to Nina's great-grandmother, who baked the cake whenever relatives came to visit. They decide to recreate it, although the instructions are far less precise than the recipes Nina usually follows. Together they measure the ingredients and discuss what “a little milk” might mean. Nina prepares the apples while her grandmother explains how the family once collected fruit from a tree outside their old home. The recipe becomes an excuse to share memories that Nina has never heard before. The cake emerges golden and fragrant. After allowing it to cool, they taste a slice. It is not exactly as her grandmother remembers, but the difference does not spoil the moment. Nina copies the recipe carefully, adding the measurements they used and a short account of the afternoon. She realises that family traditions survive partly because people repeat them, but also because they are willing to record the stories behind them. The notebook returns to the shelf, no longer forgotten. Nina plans to open it again the next time rain keeps them indoors.
