The fox at the bus stop

Un visitante inesperado en una ciudad.

A fox beside a bus stop is the last thing Tom expects to see on his journey to school. Yet there it is, moving cautiously between a tree and a garden wall while the city begins to wake up. His mother encourages him to observe from a distance. Although the fox seems comfortable near houses, it remains a wild animal. Following it or offering food could put both people and the animal at risk. Later, Tom learns that urban foxes are not necessarily lost. Some populations have adapted to living among buildings, gardens and parks. They may use quiet spaces for shelter and find a variety of foods, including small animals, insects and food waste. This flexibility helps explain their presence, but city life also creates hazards. Roads, rubbish and close contact with humans can all cause problems. People can reduce these risks by securing waste and allowing foxes to remain wild rather than treating them as pets. Tom's teacher asks the class to consider a broader question: what makes a city a habitat? Trees, green corridors and even small gardens can support living things, although they cannot replace every natural environment. The next morning, the fox is nowhere to be seen. Tom is disappointed for a moment, then pleased. Perhaps it has found somewhere quiet to rest, away from the traffic and curious eyes.
