A message from the mountain

Una excursión enseña a escuchar la montaña.

Nora and her father set off early for a mountain hike, having checked the forecast and packed suitable clothing, water and a map. The first part of the walk is peaceful, and Nora spends much of it photographing wildflowers beside the trail. As they approach a narrow section, she hears a repeated whistle. Her father initially assumes it comes from a bird, but the regular pattern makes Nora suspicious. They stop and eventually spot a woman signalling from a path above them. Her companion has injured his ankle and is unable to continue safely. Nora's father contacts the mountain rescue service, gives their approximate position and describes the nearest marked junction. He also explains that the injured walker is on higher ground. Although Nora wants to reach the pair immediately, her father points out that the slope between the paths is unstable. Attempting a direct climb could create another emergency. They stay in a safe location and keep visual contact until the professionals arrive. The rescue team assesses the injury and helps the walker descend with appropriate support. The woman thanks Nora for recognising that the whistles were a request for assistance rather than an ordinary sound. During their return, clouds gather over the peaks. Nora reflects on how easily a pleasant walk can become difficult. She learns that responsible hiking involves more than physical fitness: preparation, awareness and knowing when to ask for trained help can make a crucial difference.
